Julia Neubauer
Good conversations for transformation – Julia creates the space, facilitates, and identifies the points where further work is needed.
Background and Expertise
At the beginning of every transformation process lies the question of the starting point. Only when this is clearly visible to everyone can clear goals be set and sustainable progress be achieved. Honest conversations are the foundation for entering a discourse and/or redirecting it, adopting new perspectives, and collectively identifying common ground. This is how clear next steps for the transformation process can be defined. Regular check-ins optimally accompany the process. Non-judgmental, open, solution-oriented.
Julia Neubauer works with all facets of communication. She is primarily interested in how conversations need to be designed so that the things that matter for progress in a process are actually said. Whether at the kitchen table or during a panel discussion – good conversations for the end of the world as we know it lay the groundwork for a transformation that shapes a livable world of tomorrow.

Five Questions for Julia Neubauer
How did you come to the topics of sustainability and transformation?
My entry into sustainability was fashion and the idea of minimalism. Thinking about how much we own and consume and why. And then thinking further about where these things come from, under what conditions they are produced, what journeys they take, and what happens to them when they gather dust in our households. Anyone who thinks about this inevitably has to engage with distributive justice and capitalism. With how "fair" societies are. How equality is doing. When Verena Mischitz once said: "Climate is a dimension of every topic," she named something that had been clear to me for a long time: We can only think of transformation in terms of climate if we understand it as a holistic transformation of our lives. Ours as white, able-bodied, well-educated Europeans and as a transformation of societal systems in general.
What does "systems thinking" mean to you in sustainability transformation?
It is important to see the "big" connections and then break them down into feasible solutions. AND we need to be clear that it takes both, the "small" initiatives and the large systemic changes. We also need to be aware of where we hit systemic limits. Because otherwise we overlook where we invest energy in change and where we are beating our heads against a wall, and our energy ultimately fizzles out and we have no energy left for the things where we can actually make a difference. It is also important to realize that we can demand systemic change as individuals and as companies. By taking to the streets, getting (politically) involved, taking a position in conversations, and staying in dialogue about what expectations of systems are. Depending on the area, the approach is just different.
What drives you in your work for sustainable transformation?
The topic of sustainable action is deeply anchored in me – I cannot block it out anywhere. I want to be able to say in good conscience: I did what I believed was right and what was possible for me at different times. I owe that to myself and I owe it to future generations.
How does peer consulting work for you and what does it bring to clients?
I appreciate that so much breadth is possible. There is a lot of flexibility. Strengths can be very deliberately and individually bundled together. There is no one-size-fits-all roadmap – instead, depending on the challenge, the consultants who complement each other best are brought together.
Where do you see the greatest levers for systemic change?
I see the greatest levers in grassroots movements, in bold climate policy, and in personal impact – whether in the "small" circle of friends or in the larger context of courageous politics.
